An exhibition of traditional Bulgarian goldsmithing from the National Revival period opens in Burgas on September 17. Spirit and Matter: Goldsmithing in the Bulgarian Lands brings together jewellery, amulets and religious prints, offering a glimpse into the craftsmanship, faith and symbolism of the period.
The exhibition, hosted by the Sea Casino Cultural Centre, includes exquisite examples of traditional jewellery – pafti, ornate belt buckles worn as part of traditional dress; podbradnitsi, decorative chin ornaments; and bracelets. Also on display are amulet and snuff boxes engraved with floral and animal motifs, as well as National Revival-era prints – paper icons bought by pilgrims visiting holy sites.
Through the expressive power of the jewellery and the religious imagery of the prints, the exhibition recreates the world of the National Revival – a period of spiritual awakening, flourishing crafts and efforts to preserve Bulgarian identity.
The collection has been provided by Antonio Vasilev, a collector committed to preserving and promoting Bulgaria’s cultural heritage.
