Radev and Babiš criticise Europe’s approach to war in Ukraine

Prime Minister Rumen Radev and his Czech counterpart Andrej Babiš called for greater European efforts to end the war in Ukraine during talks in Sofia.

Radev described Russia’s war against Ukraine as a “war of attrition” and called for peace to be reached as soon as possible. He again argued that Europe should stop “pouring money into this war”, BNR reporter Marta Mladenova said. His comments came a week after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico visited Bulgaria.

Babiš said Europe was “completely passive” when it came to ending the war against Ukraine, while US President Donald Trump “keeps talking to Putin”.

Business ties were also on the agenda. At a Bulgarian-Czech business forum in Sofia, Babiš said he expected business between the two countries to grow and more joint projects to be developed. He noted that Czech companies were strongly export-oriented. The forum brought together 176 Bulgarian and around 50 Czech companies.

Babiš and Radev also highlighted the two countries’ similar positions on the development of nuclear energy and the need for “cheap, reliable and stable electricity in Europe”.
