“Children of the City” – X-R@Y’s song for Sofia

On September 17, the Orthodox Church honours the holy martyrs Sophia, Faith, Hope and Love. Since 1992, the date has also been celebrated as the day of Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital – a city whose beauty and distinctive atmosphere have inspired generations of artists and musicians.

Among the songs dedicated to Sofia is Children of the City by X-R@Y. The band was formed in 2006 by Veselin Kirev on vocals, Nikolay Nikolov on gadulka and Nikolay Dimitrov on guitar and vocals. They chose the name X-R@Y because they wanted their music to reach deep beneath the surface, just as X-rays do. Drummer Marian Zhivkov joined them two years later, completing the line-up.

Released in 2019, Children of the City was written and composed by Nikolay Dimitrov, with the arrangement by Veselin Kirev, Nikolay Dimitrov, Nikolay Nikolov, Marian Zhivkov and Miroslav Gaidarski.

The song is the musicians’ tribute to Sofia, taking us through its streets and past its landmarks and favourite places.
