EC and Bulgaria to host Regional Connectivity Summit

The EU is stronger than ever, yet at the same time it feels more insecure. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this in her “State of the Union” address to the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, our correspondent Lyudmila Valeva reported. Von der Leyen summed up the current situation by saying that we are living through a complex era of enormous opportunities and major dangers, one that all countries are navigating.

In her speech, she announced plans for a new international connectivity project aimed at directly linking the South Caucasus and Central Asia with the European market through the so-called Middle Corridor. The Global Gateway initiative seeks to mobilise up to 12 billion euros in investment, with the goal of tripling trade flows and drastically reducing cargo transit times by 2030.

In this context, Ursula von der Leyen announced that a Regional Connectivity Summit would be organised jointly with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria.
