The Invisible Animals organisation is launching a two-week protest outside the National Assembly today, with volunteers taking turns to spend 12 hours at a time inside a cage.

“Confining newborn calves in individual isolation cages from the moment they are born is cruelty to innocent creatures. Ending it is a moral issue that MPs must address because society expects them to,” the organisation said.

The activists said a petition signed by more than 150,000 people calling for the cages to be banned was submitted to the National Assembly in June. They also cited a Market Links survey showing that 82% of Bulgarians support ending the practice.

For the next two weeks, someone will remain inside the cage outside parliament around the clock. About 200 volunteers will take 12-hour shifts, in what organisers say is a reminder to MPs to keep their election promises.
