Archaeologists have uncovered a complete scene from the medieval murals of the Church of the Life-giving Spring of the Mother of God in Melnik, Archaeologia Bulgarica report. The discovery was made following the removal of a mural from the National Revival period, revealing frescoes dating back to the 13th or early 14th century.
"This
is the largest fragment of the church's medieval murals discovered to
date," Dr. Metodi Zlatkov commented. "We have no doubt that
it depicts the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, as Mary is clearly
visible with a halo, portrayed as an infant," Zlatkov added.
Preliminary data suggest that the artists who created the
mural
likely came from the region of Serres and Thessaloniki, the
archaeologist noted.
