Agriculture Ministry seeks to replace ear tags with GPS trackers for livestock

Speaking to BNR from Brussels, where the Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting is held, Minister of Agriculture Plamen Abrovski said that he expected the regulation on the Common Agricultural Policy to be finalized. One of the goals is to include specific support for rose growers in the document, ensuring the EU recognizes the existence of a country possessing something unique to the entire world, Abrovski said.

Together with Greece, Cyprus, and Romania, the country will submit a proposal requiring the European Commission to review its legislation regarding livestock farming, specifically concerning disease control and animal vaccination, the minister pointed out. He added that the ministry continues its checks for "virtual" (non-existent) animals. "These checks are conducted daily. What we aim to do is designate an experimental region in Bulgaria where we would fit all animals with GPS trackers. This has not been done before in the EU. It could become the official method of identification within the Union," the minister said.
