The Netherlands remains the most preferred destination among Bulgarian students choosing to pursue higher education abroad, with a share of 32%, according to an analysis by Integral Bulgaria. Twice as many young people will begin their studies in Spain this academic year, placing the country second with 16%. Austria and Italy follow with 10% each, while Germany ranks next with 9%.
The focus of Bulgarian prospective students remains primarily on Europe. Among the attractive options for higher education are tuition-free studies in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, as well as lower tuition fees in France and Belgium. Monaco, Malta and Hungary are also among the destinations attracting interest from Bulgarian students.
In addition to financial considerations, rapid changes in the digital era are playing an increasingly important role in students’ choice of university. Business, economics, computer science, technology, engineering and design remain the top choices, while interest in law and psychology is also growing this year. According to education experts, these are areas where the human factor remains decisive and which will be less affected by artificial intelligence.
