Douglas Holder, President Donald Trump’s nominee for US ambassador to Bulgaria, has said he intends, if confirmed, to raise with the Bulgarian government the importance of continuing its support for Ukraine. Speaking at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Holder also described Bulgaria as “a critical ally in ensuring the security of the region”.
Holder made the comments after Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen asked him about Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s announcement that Bulgaria would reduce its assistance to Ukraine, BTA reported.
Holder also highlighted the potential for closer economic ties between Sofia and Washington. “The United States and Bulgaria enjoy a strong economic relationship, but we can improve commercial ties, especially in the energy sector, AI, and critical minerals,” he said. “If confirmed, I will also focus on economic diplomacy.”
On a more personal level, Holder spoke of his appreciation for Bulgaria: “I have already developed a deep appreciation for Bulgaria's rich history, vibrant culture, and resilient people, and I look forward to learning even more from our Bulgarian friends and partners.”
