Fentanyl is increasingly displacing heroin on the drug market in the Bulgarian capital, Nikolay Shopov of the Narcotics Sector at the Sofia Directorate of the Ministry of Interior told our reporter Nikolay Hristov.

“We can now say that heroin is no longer available on the streets of Sofia, or is extremely rare, with the entire market having been taken over by fentanyl,” Shopov said.

According to him, fentanyl entered the capital four to five years ago, but its presence has become increasingly noticeable over the past one to two years. Ever larger quantities are being seized, which Shopov said is an indication of rising consumption. Nevertheless, the most widely used drugs in Sofia remain marijuana, amphetamines and cocaine.

Shopov also said that a single dose of fentanyl in Sofia costs around €10, while the price per gram ranges from €70 to €100.
