The level of illegal migration through Bulgarian border has fallen by 40% compared with last year, Border Police Director Anton Zlatanov said.

Migrants are primarily from Afghanistan, Syria and Morocco, while the authorities’ efforts are focused not only on detaining them but also on uncovering the trafficking networks behind their movement.

Efforts to curb irregular migration are continuing, and the level of such migration is currently negligible, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov said. He also highlighted the role of the Turkish side in protecting Bulgaria’s border:

“When we tell you that we have detained 10 people, you can be sure that there were at least another 100 whom we prevented from crossing. We stopped them right at the border line, passed the information on to our Turkish colleagues, and they detained them on the other side,” Zlatanov explained, quoted by BNR correspondent in Haskovo Zhivka Todorova.
