Sofia Marathon draws over 12,000 runners from 70 countries

More than 12,000 runners from 70 countries have registered for the 43rd Wizz Air Sofia Marathon, to be held on October 10 and 11, the organisers said.

The event is now comparable in size to marathons in Bologna, Bruges, Seville, Leeds and Edinburgh. Nearly 2,000 of those registered are foreign runners, 50% more than last year. Overall registrations have doubled compared with each of the previous two editions.

The 5 km and 10 km races will take place on Saturday, followed by the half-marathon and the full 42.195 km marathon on Sunday.

“We expect around 25 elite athletes from different countries this year. Eight have personal bests of between 2 hours 9 minutes and 2 hours 15 minutes. With a good race, we could see a new course record,” said the marathon’s sporting director, Militsa Mircheva.
