Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov is one of seven authors that German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung believes deserve this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. The winner will be announced in Stockholm on October 8.
Gospodinov is Bulgaria’s most widely translated and internationally acclaimed contemporary writer. He became the first Bulgarian to win the International Booker Prize for his novel Time Shelter, translated into English by Angela Rodel.
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung describes him as one of the most original voices in contemporary international literature. Born in Yambol in 1968 and now living in Sofia, Gospodinov explores Europe in all its moods and states of mind with poetic virtuosity and melancholic irony, the newspaper writes.
It describes his work as perceptive, experimental and diverse, spanning prose and poetry as well as opera librettos and screenplays.
