There is currently no immediate threat to the airports in Varna and Burgas following today’s drone attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea. This is what Michael Reusch, Chief Executive Officer of Fraport Bulgaria, which operates the country’s two Black Sea airports, told Radio Bulgaria on the sidelines of the 11th Hotel and Tourism Investment Forum (HTIF) in Sofia. He said the company had already stepped up security measures and was closely monitoring developments.
“Of course, we have raised our security levels, as we are part of the public infrastructure and the national security programme. We are monitoring the situation very closely, but there is no need to give in to panic. In my view, there is no immediate danger at this stage. As far as I know, the country’s official authorities are keeping a very close eye on the situation in communication with NATO and EU partners,” Reusch said.
He stressed that the situation should neither be underestimated nor exaggerated. In his view, the drone attacks in the Black Sea will have no impact on next year’s tourist season or on the Eurovision Song Contest being held in Burgas.
Reusch made the comments just hours after a second consecutive drone attack targeted commercial vessels in the Black Sea, near Bulgarian territorial waters.
