Sonya Yoncheva and Domingo Hindoyan conquer new stages and opera houses in USA

Domingo Hindoyan has begun his tenure as music director of Los Angeles Opera in the world capital of show business. On 17 October, L.A. Opera opened its new season with a performance of Georges Bizet’s Carmen, conducted by Hindoyan. The young maestro’s performance received glowing reviews from critics.

Hindoyan has planned the entire new season for Los Angeles Opera, featuring an exciting line-up of opera productions, concerts, musicals, and educational and community initiatives. He is only the third music director in the prestigious American opera company’s 40-year history, succeeding renowned conductor James Conlon, who held the position for 20 years. Alongside his new appointment, Hindoyan continues to serve as chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

His wife, Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva, was a special guest at the opening ceremony for the new season, which was attended by numerous celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez.

Sonya Yoncheva is in the United States for her long-awaited debut as Medea in Luigi Cherubini’s opera Médée at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The first performance is scheduled for 30 October.

Medea is one of Yoncheva’s most successful roles. Her debut in the opera’s original French version at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in October 2018 caused a sensation, with critics comparing her vocal warmth and dramatic intensity to those of the legendary Maria Callas. In New York, Yoncheva will perform the role in Italian. Medea will be her 14th leading role at America’s most prestigious opera house, a record unmatched by any Bulgarian performer to date.

Bulgarian audiences will have the opportunity to see the internationally acclaimed couple perform live in Sofia in just two months, at the spectacular Christmas gala concert One Light.
