Bulgaria is working to consolidate its position as a transport and logistics hub linking Europe, the Western Balkans and the Black Sea region, Transport Minister Georgi Peev said at the Sofia Economic Forum. He highlighted the development of vertical transport corridors, cross-border links and the need for closer cooperation among countries in the region.
Bulgaria, Greece and Romania are pursuing joint projects along three main north-south axes: western, central and eastern. The aim is to improve connections between border crossings, industrial centres, logistics hubs and ports. “An important step is the Action Plan signed by the three countries in Brussels in September 2026,” the minister stressed.
The plan includes 25 priority cross-border projects with a total value of around €22.8 billion. Key areas include modernising railway links between the three countries, improving access to the ports of Varna, Burgas and Ruse, building new bridges over the Danube and increasing the capacity of existing infrastructure.
“Improved connectivity along the north-south axis is important not only for economic development. In the current geopolitical environment, it also matters for the security and resilience of the region, including through the development of dual-use infrastructure that supports both civilian and military mobility,” Georgi Peev emphasised.
