Nine countries could receive additional financial assistance from the EU during the next programming period to offset losses incurred as a result of the war in Ukraine. Bulgaria will seek EUR 2 billion in compensation for attacks on merchant vessels in the country's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
This became clear following a visit to Varna by a delegation of Members of the European Parliament, which included Andrey Novakov and Emil Radev, as well as fellow MEPs from Germany, Austria and Poland. The funding earmarked for Bulgaria for the 2028–2034 period amounts to EUR 22.3 billion.
“Bulgaria should receive more funding to compensate farmers, transport operators, the tourism sector and everyone else suffering from a war they did not start”, Andrey Novakov said.
The purpose of the European Parliament delegation's visit to Varna was to gain first-hand insight into the situation in the Black Sea region following drone attacks on merchant vessels, BTA reported.
