In a unanimous vote of 201 in favour, Bulgaria’s parliament approved the withdrawal of the 2026 draft budget, along with the financial plans for the Health Insurance Fund and the State Social Security Fund.

Although the proposal to withdraw the budget originated with the ruling party, no government representatives spoke during the debate, according to a BNR Horizont report.

“After the largest street protests since 1990, the government has finally reconsidered its position and been permitted to withdraw this disastrous budget. I hope it is clear that stubbornness alone cannot govern, and that the government should resign,” said Assen Vassilev of the We Continue the Change party.

“Of course it was the right decision to withdraw the budgets. It would have been better still not to have submitted them in this form at all,” commented Dimo Drenchev of the Vazrazhdane party.
