This is what Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has met at the Presidency with Christopher Smith, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eastern Europe. “A useful discussion with Christopher Smith on the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the U.S., and the opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the fields of investment, defense, and energy", Radev wrote on X after the meeting.

The President emphasized that in the context of the European Union’s stated intention to gradually stop importing Russian gas, new opportunities are emerging to increase supplies of liquefied natural gas from the United States and other countries through the terminals in Greece and Turkey, to which Bulgaria has access. According to him, this will contribute to strengthening energy diversification not only for Bulgaria but also for other countries in the region.

Regarding the modernization of Bulgaria’s armed forces, Radev stated that industrial cooperation needs to be deepened, with the active involvement of the Bulgarian defense industry. He also highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in defense for the modernization of military personnel training models.

Both sides agreed that ensuring security and stability in the region is key to promoting investment flows, economic development, and the prosperity of citizens.
