Delyan Peevski, leader of “DPS–New Beginning,” has asked for a review of his protection by Bulgaria’s National Security Service (NSO), the agency responsible for guarding senior officials. Peevski sent a letter to the NSO and its overseeing parliamentary commission, asking the commission to determine whether he still requires protection. He noted that he had previously waived security and urged the commission to reconsider the decision, BNR reporter Daniel Inkov reported.

“If my protection is needed, they should decide. If it is not needed, they should decide as well. I will accept the commission’s decision, as I did when I waived security in the past, but I will not allow populist measures to leave members of parliament unprotected,” Peevski said.

The We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (PP–DB) party has announced plans to request the withdrawal of Peevski’s security.

The matter is expected to be discussed today at a meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Internal Security and Public Order. Ivaylo Mirchev of PP–DB and a group of MPs have proposed amendments to the NSO law.

Later, the committee unanimously approved a bill submitted by PP-DB MPs Ivaylo Mirchev and Bozhidar Bojanov at the first reading. The bill stipulates that the NSO will not provide security for MPs, except for the Speaker of the National Assembly.
