Bulgaria has never abstained from freezing Russian assets and voted in favor of their long-term freezing, outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs Georg Georgiev told the Bulgarian National Television. He was asked why Sofia is abstaining from supporting the unfreezing of Russian assets as a reparations loan, while at the same time supporting a EUR 90 billion interest-free loan for Ukraine.
Until now, the freezing on Russian assets had been reconfirmed every six months, but a decision has now been made to make it indefinite, Georgiev noted. “We joined a declaration together with Italy, Belgium, and Malta, which states that any potential spending of the assets must comply with European legislation and rules. This declaration does not change our vote, does not alter the significance of what we have done, and does not change our actions”, Georg Georgiev said.
