The cooperation agreement between the EU and Mercosur of January 17 will facilitate access for Bulgarian companies and small businesses to the markets of the South American trade bloc, according to information published on the European Commission’s portal. Bulgarian businesses will be able to offer services much more easily and at lower cost, while local producers (of food and non-food products) will be able to increase their exports. The deal also envisages higher foreign sales at better prices for traditional Bulgarian delicacies.

Bulgaria says the EU-Mercosur trade deal will not hurt its economy

The European Commission emphasizes the importance of trade for the Bulgarian economy, noting that 866,000 jobs in the country - one in every four - depend on domestic exports and on EU exports to the rest of the world. In 2024, Bulgaria’s trade turnover with Mercosur amounted to €637 million, which is about 1% of Bulgaria’s total imports and exports.

It is further highlighted that the agreement provides for lower or zero tariffs, greater and cheaper exports of Bulgarian goods, opens up new opportunities for Bulgarian farmers, protects traditional Bulgarian foods and beverages, and guarantees EU support for Bulgarian farmers in the event of market disruptions.
