Junior doubles champion at the Australian Open, Dimitar Kisimov, has returned to Sofia. In the final in Melbourne, Kisimov and his South African partner Connor Doig defeated the home favorites Cooper Coze and Emerali Ibraimi of Australia 6:3, 6:4.

“I feel great. The feeling of winning a Grand Slam title is indescribable. I’m proud of what we achieved and grateful to everyone for the support,” Kisimov said in his first comments to reporters.

“We believed we could reach the final. My coach and my partner’s coach prepared very strong strategies. The most difficult moment was right before the final. There was also a lot of tension in the opening games, but gradually we controlled our emotions and managed to win,” shared the 17-year-old Bulgarian talent.

“This year I will mostly compete in junior tournaments, but I will also play in some men’s events. My main goal is to progress in singles. I dream of winning a Grand Slam title and reaching the top 10 in the world rankings. I hope to surpass the achievements of Grigor Dimitrov,” Kisimov added.

For the Bulgarian talent, the appearance in Melbourne was his debut at a junior Grand Slam tournament.

With this victory, Kisimov brought Bulgaria its 11th Grand Slam title overall. He now joins the ranks of names such as Manuela Maleeva, Magdalena Maleeva, Sesil Karatantcheva, Grigor Dimitrov, Adrian Andreev, and Ivan Ivanov, who last year won the singles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open.

The young tennis player was welcomed at Vasil Levski Airport by many of his teammates, classmates, and friends, who greeted him with chants of “Champion!”.
