President Iliana Iotova has begun consultations with parliamentary parties over the appointment of an interim prime minister. The largest parliamentary group, GERB-SDS, has proposed selecting an acting prime minister from outside the names currently under discussion.
Denitsa Sacheva, deputy chair of the GERB-SDS parliamentary group, said they are ready to support the election of a new National Assembly speaker who could head a caretaker government. She stressed that the parliamentary group would not advise the head of state on her choice of candidate, nor would they comment on any of the names under consideration.
President Iotova noted that there is insufficient time to elect a new parliamentary speaker. The priority, she said, is to ensure fair, transparent, and well-organised elections. She said she is doing everything possible to make sure the vote's held at the earliest possible date.
