Following her meeting with representatives of GERB, President Iliana Iotova held consultations with the second-largest parliamentary group, We Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria (PP–DB). The talks are part of the process of selecting a caretaker prime minister.
“We must respond to the expectations of Bulgarian citizens. They have called for fair and transparent elections and for a well-organised electoral process in order to restore trust in Bulgaria’s institutions,” the head of state said.
Ivaylo Mirchev of PP–DB said fair elections had not been held under the previous caretaker cabinet. “We saw how the former caretaker prime minister served the Borisov–Peevski corruption model. This must not be allowed to happen again,” he said.
According to Mirchev, fair elections are only possible if a minister of the interior is appointed to take all necessary measures against vote-buying, and if a minister of justice is appointed to propose a new acting chief prosecutor. He added that safeguards are also needed to ensure that funds allocated to municipalities are not used to buy votes.
