The caretaker cabinet led by Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov has replaced all 28 regional governors in the country. Most of the newly-appointed regional governors have experience in this role or as deputy governors in governments involving the “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” (PP–DB) coalition until 2025.
“It is now certain that the elections will not be fair”, wrote Nikola Nikolov, in charge of public communications for the GERB party, on social media. He emphasized that all new regional governors are members of the parties within the PP–DB coalition.
Caretaker Prime Minister: We will work in coordination for fair elections
Addressing GERB mayors in the Stara Zagora region, the party leader Boyko Borisov also stated that the caretaker government is aligned with PP–DB and that the upcoming elections will not be fair.
On February 24, 2026, the Central Election Commission will begin accepting applications for the registration of parties and coalitions wishing to participate in the early parliamentary elections scheduled for April 19, 2026. The submission period will continue until March 4.
