Today in Sofia, a ceremonial academic session marked the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising - a defining moment in Bulgaria’s path to freedom.
The day began with a solemn ritual at the Military Academy “Georgi Stoykov Rakovski,” where hundreds knelt in tribute to those who lost their lives in the uprising organized by the Giurgiu Revolutionary Committee. Among those present were guests from Klisura and Panagyurishte - towns forever linked to the events of 1876.

Following the ceremony, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov emphasized the historical significance of the uprising:
“The April Uprising became a key factor that paved the way for the political and military processes leading to Bulgaria’s Liberation.”
Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov reminded those present that history is shaped not only by heroes, but also by difficult truths:
“The uprising taught us to be worthy.”
Later, a formal academic session at Sofia University gathered leading historians. Prof. Mira Markova highlighted the role of youth in times of transformation: “At the beginning of every new era stand the young - driven, fearless, and hungry for change.”
An exhibition titled “For the Freedom of a Nation” also opened today at the National Library.
150 years later, the April Uprising remains a powerful symbol of sacrifice, dignity, and the enduring pursuit of freedom.
