The Academic Council of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” has unanimously opposed the closure of the Czech Center in Sofia.
“The information in Czech national media about the termination of the activities of the Czech Center in Sofia was surprising for us. With this letter, we express a firm position in defense of this representative cultural institution of the Czech Republic in our country and strongly urge that the Czech Center in Sofia not be closed.
The Czech Center in Bulgaria is the successor to long-standing Czech-Bulgarian cultural ties, which remain an important part of Bulgaria’s cultural memory. Another reason against its closure is its established place in Bulgaria’s cultural calendar. The center attracts a diverse audience, as its program successfully combines highlights from the overall program of Czech Centers worldwide with joint projects with many Bulgarian academic and cultural institutions.
We believe that the decision can still be reconsidered and that the significant activities of the Czech Center in Sofia can continue”, the letter further states, as quoted by BGNES.
