The Bulgarian government is ending the transfer of weaponry from the Bulgarian Armed Forces to Ukraine. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Rumen Radev at the opening of a government meeting.
“We have already given enough. Our country continues to bear the socio-economic consequences of this bloody war. We are convinced that a peaceful solution cannot be achieved through military means, and we therefore once again call for a comprehensive and realistic approach, focused on finding a diplomatic settlement,” Radev said, as quoted by BTA.
According to the Prime Minister, Bulgaria’s European future should not be defined by “pouring ever more resources” into the conflict.
Speaking to bTV, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov stated that since taking office he has not received any specific requests for military assistance from the Ukrainian side.
He also expressed skepticism about the European Union’s ability to act as a mediator in achieving a just peace in Ukraine.
Whether Bulgaria’s defence industry continues to sell weapons to Ukraine is a matter for the industry itself, not for the Ministry of Defence, Stoyanov added.
Meanwhile, while welcoming his counterparts to Sofia for the 30th Summit of the South-East European Cooperation Process, Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova commented that “any future decision on assistance - whether military-technical or humanitarian - will be taken through the established procedure, by a decision of the Council of Ministers and subsequently submitted for debate in the National Assembly.”
