Bulgarian stage design art will be presented to an international audience in Berlin through the exhibition "Traces in Space", opening on June 16 at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in the German capital.

Curated by Hannah Schwarz and Petar Mitev, the exhibition features more than 30 stage design projects and works created for theatrical productions that transcend the boundaries of the stage and take on an independent life as works of visual art. The projects on display reflect both universal human themes embedded in classical drama and pressing issues facing contemporary society.

"Today, the work of stage designers is most often focused on texts characterized by a sharp dramaturgy directed at the problems of the modern world. Frequently provocative and expressed through the means of contemporary language, such dramaturgy by Bulgarian and foreign authors consciously abandons all romanticism, rejects linguistic purism, identifies problems and seeks answers to issues such as civil legislation, the LGBTQ community, minorities, the legalization of marijuana and prostitution, and more. Themes associated with so-called political theatre are also well represented," the event information states.

Through Traces in Space, the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Berlin continues its mission of promoting Bulgarian artists and contemporary Bulgarian art to European audiences, creating opportunities for cultural dialogue and professional exchange.

The exhibition opens on June 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Berlin (Leipziger Str. 114-115). Admission is free.
