Sofia is the capital of courage, smiles and immense human potential. This was what President Iliana Iotova said at the opening of the Down Syndrome World Championships, the press service of the head of state reported. Nearly 400 athletes from 27 countries will take part in the competition, which is held under the auspices of the head of state and lasts from June 15 to 19.

Bulgaria will be represented by 20 athletes in all five disciplines - athletics, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis and table tennis. According to the head of state, the championship is much more than a competition for medals. It is a triumph of the spirit, a victory against isolation, prejudice and loneliness. “They say that you are the boys and girls of the smile,” the president addressed the athletes with Down syndrome and pointed out that this smile shines like the brightest sun in their souls.
