The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no information from intelligence services indicating that Russian Patriarch Kirill was a KGB agent. This is stated in a written response by Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova-Chamova to a question from MP Ivaylo Mirchev of “Democratic Bulgaria”.

The question was prompted by statements from Prime Minister Rumen Radev and the foreign minister expressing reservations about the EU’s planned 21st package of sanctions against Russia. One of the reasons cited was the inclusion of the Russian patriarch among the individuals who would be subject to sanctions, BNR reporter Maria Fileva informed.

“It is difficult for me to believe that the State Intelligence Agency and the Military Intelligence Service do not have such information”, Ivaylo Mirchev commented on Facebook. He published documents from the Dossier Commission. According to him, they show that the cleric’s activities at the World Council of Churches (WCC) were conducted through an operational channel in cooperation with KGB Fifth Chief Directorate.
