At the start of the government meeting, Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced that the cabinet had taken the first steps to address the issue of juvenile crime and was considering more radical measures.
Commenting on the brutal killing of a man by youths in Plovdiv, Premier Radev said: “It must be clear that Bulgaria’s children must be raised in the family and at school. We cannot leave them in the toxic environment of social media”. He also stressed that in tragedies such as the killing in Plovdiv, the entire society must come together in support of the victim’s loved ones.
“It is shocking that politicians and influencers are trying to gain political dividends from the murder. The same people who oppose the introduction of the ‘Virtues and Religions’ subject in schools. The same people who systematically destroy monuments and erase the memory of anti-fascism are now shocked by the fascist symbols of the attackers in Plovdiv.”
“There is no place for fascist atrocities in Bulgaria, and we will take the necessary measures”, the prime minister added.
