“There is no direct threat to national security.” This is how Minister of Defence Dimitar Stoyanov commented on an article in the Financial Times, which claims that Iranian forces are assessing the possibilities of striking American assets in Southeast Europe, for example in Bulgaria, which has approved the use of its Bezmer Airbase for refueling American aircraft.

The minister explained that he had received a document from the Military Intelligence Service with the assurance that there is no threat either to sites where American aircraft are stationed, or to others on the territory of Bulgaria. “We are monitoring the situation well enough, we are also receiving information from partner services, and I think that at the moment there really is no such threat to our country,” he said.

Meanwhile, a NATO spokesman said that the Alliance is ready to respond to any threat and will do whatever is necessary to protect its members.
