700-km cycling challenge “Danube Ultra" to kick off on August 30

Around 110 cyclists from Bulgaria and Romania will take on the 700-kilometre route in the 13th edition of the “Danube Ultra: Odyssey 2026” cycling challenge. The participants will set off on August 30 from Bulgaria's Vidin, the initiative’s founder and organiser Boris Begamov told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA).

The event is not a race. Each participant chooses their own pace, with the challenge offered either as a 48-hour extreme format or as a five- or seven-day journey, with the final destination being the village of Durankulak.

Among the cyclists who will follow the route along the Danube are 82-year-old Prof. Antoaneta Momchilova and Romanian competitor Oana Trif, as well as Iskren Ivanov from Dobrich. In 2023, Ivanov completed the 700-kilometre route in 28 hours and will now attempt to improve his own record.
