Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the final qualifying round of the US Open in New York, defeating Kazakhstan’s Timofey Skatov 7-6(5), 6-4. The Bulgarian did not have an easy path to victory. He had to win a tiebreak in the first set, while in the second he broke serve in the third game and held on to his lead until the end of the match.
For a place in the main draw of the year’s final Grand Slam tournament, Dimitrov will face Finland’s Otto Virtanen, who defeated Great Britain’s Jack Pinnington Jones 2-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Dimitrov’s best performance at the US Open came in 2019, when he reached the semifinals.
