Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise arrives in Burgas with an environmental cause

Greenpeace’s icebreaker Arctic Sunrise will dock in Burgas on September 5 and will be open to visitors, Greenpeace Bulgaria said.

The vessel’s visit is part a campaign opposing new oil and gas extraction projects in the sea. Held under the slogan "A Living Black Sea Without Oil and Gas", the visit will feature a photo exhibition in front of the ship marking Greenpeace’s 15 years of work in Bulgaria.

The visit to Burgas follows a scientific survey of marine mammals along Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast, carried out by an international team in the Ropotamo and Strandzha protected areas. A hydrophone attached to the vessel’s hull was used to record the sounds of cetaceansas far as 24 nautical miles offshore.

“Conducting this survey has been a real thrill for our team. The vessel enabled us to collect valuable data on where marine mammals are found and how they use the marine environment”, said Martin Tomov, coordinator of the campaign.
