Plovdiv hosts main celebrations marking the 141st anniversary of the Unification

''Today, we honor all those whose efforts and dedication made the Unification possible and left an enduring example for generations to come”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on Facebook on the occasion of the 141st anniversary of the Unification of Eastern Rumelia with the Principality of Bulgaria, extending greetings to all Bulgarians. “141 years ago, Bulgarians turned their aspiration for Unification into a historic achievement that remains a symbol of courage, statesmanlike resolve and national responsibility”, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote.

The main celebrations marking the 141st anniversary of the Unification are taking place in Plovdiv. The commemorations began at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Mother of God with a solemn prayer service led by Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv. “Let us be peacemakers, encourage others to be peacemakers as well, and remain united in the principles bequeathed to us by our Lord Jesus Christ”, Metropolitan Nikolay of Plovdiv said in his address.

The anniversary is also being marked in a number of other cities across the country. In Sofia, a solemn ceremony was held in front of the Battenberg Mausoleum, BGNES reported. The National Guards Unit took part in the ceremony, while Sofia’s mayor Vasil Terziev delivered an address. He stressed that all Bulgarians should work together as one team for a prosperous and wise Bulgaria where everyone’s voice matters.

At 8:30 p.m., a ceremonial military tattoo and fireworks display will be held at Unification Square in Plovdiv. At 8:45 p.m., Bulgaria’s President Iliana Iotova will deliver an address.
