GERB will not field candidates for president or vice president in the October 25 election, following a decision by the party’s Executive Commission.
GERB said the commission’s reasoning largely echoed the position expressed by party leader Boyko Borissov. The party had earlier announced a press conference for September 8 but later postponed it.
On September 6, Borissov said that fielding a GERB candidate would split the pro-European right-wing vote.

Initiative committees have until 5 pm on September 14 to apply for registration, while the deadline for political parties expires on September 8.
