The short animated film Life with an Idiot (La vie avec un idiot) by renowned Bulgarian animation artist Theodore Ushev, based on the novella of the same name by Russian dissident writer Viktor Erofeev, has been included in the shortlist for a César Award. The animator himself announced the news on his Facebook profile.
The film is competing for a nomination in the Best Animated Short Film category, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported.
“Being part of this selection of 12 remarkable works is an incredibly exciting experience,” Ushev said. “To see this ‘challenging’ film among the 12 best short films of the year in the highly competitive French animation scene, with my first film produced entirely in France!” the animator added. A total of 48 films were initially eligible for consideration.

Following a vote, the selection was reduced to 20 films, and in the third round to the final 12. The final César nominations will be announced on 22 January 2027.
When presenting Life with an Idiot in Bulgaria for the first time last year, Ushev said that idiocy was taking over the world.
