Romania sells cheap electricity to Bulgaria at EUR 50 per MWh and then imports it back at prices ranging from EUR 250 to EUR 350 per MWh due to poor planning, Digi24 reports, citing an analysis by the Intelligent Energy Association.
“Bulgaria is starting to build the energy infrastructure of the future, while Romania is still trying to adapt the infrastructure of the past. Romania produces cheap energy at midday, Bulgaria stores it in batteries, and Romania buys it back in the evening at explosive prices”, the association states.

Romania has approximately 10,100 MW of installed wind and solar capacity. Bulgaria has around 6,700 MW. Despite this, Bulgaria is beginning to better monetize the energy transition. Experts explain this by Bulgaria’s significant investments in energy storage systems, BTA reported.
