Greece’s Government’s Council on National Security has decided to withdraw the “Patriot” missile systems that were temporarily deployed in early March in the town of Didymoteicho in northeastern Greece and on the island of Karpathos, amid the war in Iran.
- Greek missiles and aircraft to support Bulgaria’s air defence
- Minister Nikolaos Dendias: It was Greece's dutyto respond to Bulgaria's request
The battery in Didymoteicho was deployed at Sofia’s request to protect critical infrastructure along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast from a potential missile attack. The new decision is linked to the end of concerns over a ballistic threat and the need to redeploy the systems to their bases, Bulgarian National Radio’s correspondent in Greece Katya Peeva reported.
In addition to the “Patriot” missile systems, Greece also provided two F-16 fighter aircraft to strengthen the defense of Bulgaria’s airspace.
