With the success of the song “Bangaranga” by the charming and talented singer DARA, which brought her to the top of “Eurovision 2026,” a new word has appeared in the Bulgarian language - “bangaranga”, linguists from the Department of Bulgarian Language at Sofia University told Bulgarian National Television.

''Bangaranga'' is Bulgaria’s song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2026

The word comes from Jamaican Patois slang, where “bangarang” means commotion, noise, or rebellion. In Bulgaria, however, it has already taken on another feeling - one of life-affirming mood, energy, and emotion, which DARA brings to the performance of the song. The language is adapting it for its own purposes, turning it into a verb, noun, adjective, and more.

“Bangaranga” debuts at No. 12 on Spotify’s Global Top 50

“The situation is 'bangaranga',” “I’m bangarang-ing,” “I’m bangaranged” (including in the sense of “slightly drunk”) are just some of the new forms people are inventing. Linguists even came across a dog adoption ad reading: “A little bangarang is looking for a home, and we’re looking for its bangaranga human.”

Whether the word will become a permanent part of the Bulgarian language remains to be seen.
