Citizens gather today at 09:30 to protest in front of the Courthouse in Plovdiv. At that time, the Court of Appeal will consider the measures for the detention of five minors - part of a group of 10 youths who participated in the brutal murder of a 37-year-old man. It is believed that the five detainees committed the crime, while the others filmed it with their phones. Neo-Nazi symbolism also appears in the videos. The protesters say they are gathering as a sign of sympathy for the family of the murdered man and to demand a fair trial.
The
protest comes against the backdrop of increasing number of cases of violence in
Bulgaria committed by groups of teenagers. The leader of "We Continue the
Change" Asen Vassilev called on Prime Minister Rumen Radev to
order the State Agency for National Security to conduct an
investigation into whether a neo-Nazi network exists in the country
and whether it is connected to Russian propaganda groups in Bulgaria.
According to Rumen Radev's government, the inconsistent policy
against anti-social acts and the lack of effective control and
punishments for years are among the problems that have led to the
feeling of impunity in society.
