Bulgarian police are taking part in a Europe-wide road traffic enforcement operation focusing primarily on the use of mobile phones while driving and the wearing of seat belts and other safety restraints, Chief Inspector Lachezar BliThe international ROADPOL campaign is being held under the slogan “Focus on the Road”.znakov said.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 100,000 violations involving the failure to use seat belts, helmets and child restraint systems have been recorded. Bliznakov pointed out that passengers are also required to wear seat belts, including in the rear seats, and may be fined for failing to comply with the requirement.

If a driver is found using a mobile phone while driving, eight penalty points are deducted from their driving record, while failure to wear a seat belt results in the deduction of 10 points. Chief Inspector Bliznakov noted that passengers on buses equipped with seat belts are also required to wear them.

He added that with the end of the summer season, traffic is now increasingly concentrated in built-up areas, and police enforcement efforts are being focused there as well, BTA reports.
