On August 21, the output of Unit 5, a VVER-1000 reactor, at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant will be reduced preventively by around 120 MW, the Ministry of Energy has announced.

The decision is part of measures to ensure the safe operation of the plant amid the “continuing unprecedented and critical decline in the level of the Danube”. Forecasts for river levels upstream of the Bulgarian section continue to point to a downward trend.

The ministry noted that this is the first time in the 52-year operating history of Kozloduy NPP that a measure involving a reduction in the output of a power unit has been taken due to extreme weather and hydrological conditions.
