The magic of Bulgarian folk music to enchant Brussels on October 4

Bulgarian pop singer Nina Nikolina, folk singers Tanya Parvanova and Biserka Pilarska of the ensemble The Magical Voices, and bagpiper Tihomir Yordanov will showcase Bulgarian folk music in Brussels on October 4. The multimedia concert Bulgaria: Tradition and Future will take place at Espace Lumen at 6:30 p.m.

“The bagpipe will be an organic part of the musical narrative, in which choral performances, asymmetrical rhythms and distinctive polyphony reveal the richness of the Bulgarian tradition,” the organisers say.

The programme features references to The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices and to artists such as Lisa Gerrard, Kate Bush, George Harrison and Sylvie Vartan, all of whom have drawn inspiration from the magic of Bulgarian music. The concert will also pay tribute to Bulgarian opera stars who have conquered the world’s great stages, including Ghena Dimitrova and Sonya Yoncheva.

The evening will open with the song Izlel e Delyo Haydutin, whose recording performed by Valya Balkanska is featured on the Golden Record sent into space aboard Voyager 1.

The audience will also hear Oblache le, byalo and Hubava si, moya goro. The performance will be accompanied by French subtitles, allowing a wider local audience to experience the beauty of Bulgarian music.
